It is well understood that outer packaging does more than just hold a product — it protects, promotes, and preserves what matters most.
The Many Roles of Packaging

Keep It Fresh - Smart packaging safeguard product quality and freshness, ensuring that what leaves the producer arrives in perfect condition.
Make It Pop - Packaging enhances marketing and brand appeal, helping products stand out on crowded shelves and in competitive markets.
Last Longer - Innovative materials and design extend shelf life and product performance, reducing spoilage and improving profitability.
Reduce Waste - By protecting products more effectively, packaging reduces food waste — one of the biggest environmental challenges in the supply chain.
Meet Expectations - Today's consumers expect brands to reflect environmental responsibility and commitment to the values that matter most.
Replacing Conventional Packaging
What is less well understood is whether a sustainably designed box or carton can do the same job as the conventional one. The packaging industry remains dominated by incumbent materials such as waxed cardboard, expanded polystyrene (EPS), and polypropylene (PP) corrugated solutions. These substrates are familiar, entrenched, and supported by large-scale supply chains.
Even so, as many producers and exporters are re-evaluating their use of single-use, hard-to-recycle, or non-recyclable materials—such as EPS and waxed cardboard—the question often arises: can sustainable alternatives truly match the performance, cost, and reliability of traditional packaging?
At Disruptive Packaging, the answer is yes, and we're proving it every day. Our mission is to demonstrate that sustainability, profitability, and performance are not opposing goals.
Myth 1: Sustainable Packaging Costs More
Optimising Material and Packaging Design
Most packaging users are price-sensitive, especially given rising cost pressures, such as the volatility of freight and fuel rates, as well as the competition from long-established, low-cost packaging materials that have been in use for decades.
We created a packaging alternative, URTHCOR®, that is commercially viable, ensuring customers aren’t disadvantaged by switching from traditional materials.
Cost efficiency starts with smarter design. By rightsizing and redesigning packaging, unnecessary space and materials are eliminated, reducing cost per unit.
Reusable Packaging - Washable and reusable solutions lower long-term costs by reducing the need for constant replacement.
Flat-Packed Efficiency - Flat-packed designs save warehouse space and improve both inbound and outbound freight efficiency, delivering savings of 25–40% on freight costs.
Lightweighting - Lighter materials mean lower freight costs while maintaining the protection required for delicate produce and seafood.
This means there are broader economic benefits that URTHCOR® delivers, including lower waste disposal costs, improved freight efficiency, and enhanced brand equity from using visibly sustainable packaging.
Sustainability doesn't have to come at a premium — it can drive measurable savings across the supply chain.
Myth 2: Sustainable Packaging Can't Match Performance
Strength, Efficiency, and Load Stability
Think sustainable means sacrificing performance? Think again.
Strong, crush-resistant boxes reduce damage and spoilage, ensuring more product reaches the market in sellable condition and less gets rejected.
Performance is critical, especially in temperature-sensitive industries like seafood. We have partnered with seafood providers to develop custom URTHCOOL® solutions that maximise road and air freight efficiency while delivering thermal performance comparable to EPS. Thermal testing in a salmon supply chain showed that using 1.5 kg PhasCore icepacks, URTHCOOL® boxes maintained the same internal temperature as EPS boxes packed with 2 kg of dry or wet ice. The result: consistent protection from pack-out to delivery, with less weight and waste. In addition, superior pallet stacking and handling maximise warehouse space and simplify logistics, improving efficiency from production to distribution.
Performance and sustainability can coexist — and when they do, the entire supply chain benefits.
Myth 3: Sustainable Packaging Isn't Waterproof
Resilient in Cold Chain and Wet Conditions
When it comes to temperature-sensitive seafood supply chains, you might think nothing can replace EPS for moisture resistance and insulation. Another myth.
URTHCOOL® has been specifically engineered for the seafood, fresh produce, and frozen produce industries by addressing the strength, thermal, and waterproof requirements in supply chains, while simultaneously lowering the carbon footprint associated with packaging and logistics.
It can be packed directly on boats due to its waterproof and leakproof nature. Not only that, but it is industry-validated to have superior thermal and structural performance out of cold chain, especially when combined with Phase Change Materials (PCM).
Myth 4: Sustainable Packaging Is Complicated to Assemble
Easy-Erect Design
EPS packaging users are accustomed to pre-erected boxes, which offer significant operational benefits, particularly in industries needing rapid and high-volume packing. As well, many waxed cardboard boxes are supplied pre-glued but delivered flat, allowing for easy storage and quick assembly at the point of use.
Comparably, URTHCOR® features an easy-erect design that comes pre-glued for fast and easy assembly, whether that’s hand or machine-erected. No complicated instructions, no wasted time — just efficient, user-friendly packaging that works seamlessly in high-volume operations.
Quick assembly means faster pack-out times and reduced labour costs, proving that sustainable solutions can actually improve operational efficiency.
Myth 5: Sustainable Packaging Can't Be Customised
Photographic Print Quality
Producers come to us when they are reassessing their needs, and a typical request is wanting something eye-catching for the retail and wholesale markets.

URTHCOR® is completely customisable with photographic print quality. A grower’s, producer’s, or fishery’s branding, product information, and marketing messages can be displayed with stunning clarity and colour accuracy.
From bold graphics to detailed product imagery, sustainable packaging no longer means compromising on visual impact. Every box becomes an extension of a brand story.
Our designs are tailored solutions that meet specific performance, branding, and logistical needs. From size and shape to insulation and print, each box is engineered to perform and impress.
Reimagining Packaging for the Future
The future of packaging is circular, efficient, and performance-driven. As industries move away from single-use materials, innovation will continue to redefine what's possible. We are rethinking packaging for a world that demands both performance and sustainability—demonstrating not only better performance, but measurable cost savings and waste elimination.
